Proofreading Services

Indieproofing offers proofreading for various types of text, such as:

Websites

As the first point of contact with your customers, a professional website is an absolute must. Poor English will reflect poorly on your company profile and can at best confuse your customers - or at worst, lose you sales. We will also check text within pictures, alt text and so on as per your request.

Websites can be checked "in situ" if required, but file copies are preferred. Be sure to include style sheets, etc, so we can see them as intended in the web browser. Any amendments are made in a simple text editor so formatting is preserved.

Game Text

One area many people do not consider is their in-game text. Buttons within the game, dialogue between characters, item descriptions, even lists of random names - mistakes can slip into any of your game text quite easily and go unnoticed for some time. We check game text for obvious spelling and grammatical errors but also check for consistency. The standard practice today is to have game text in separate files (to aid localisation) and we prefer to work on the text accordingly, but can work in other formats if required. Any tags or suchlike will be preserved. Please let us know if there are any special considerations, such as line lengths

If you feel it will help understand the context, please feel free to provide a link to a demo or beta download of the game. Please note that we are limited to PC and iPhone games.

Manuals, "Readme" Files, Press Releases and Other Plain Documents

Your offline documentation is just as important as the rest of your game. A well written manual looks professional, makes instructions easier to understand and encourages customers to buy from you. And what about press releases, announcements, letters/e-mails to publishers? We can check game manuals, readme files and any "plain" documents you wish for spelling/grammar errors and consistency. We can work in files in plain text, rich text format, MS Word (including the new docx format), Open Office or HTML. Please contact us if your documentation is in a different format.

Types of Proofreading

We offer two proofreading services for all these documents.

"Filler" Proofreading

This is the most basic level of proofreading and simply aims to correct spelling, grammar and consistency errors (such as names changing spelling). This is all you'll need for a lot of game text, such as button labels and most short descriptions, but for more involved work you may wish to go for the Descriptive package.

Cost - $1 per 100 words (or part thereof).

Descriptive Proofreading

For more complex descriptive text, such as manuals or press releases, we recommend a more advanced service. As well as the spelling/grammar and consistency checking in the basic package, the descriptive package will also perform rewrites to the text to make it read more like natural English. Wherever possible we will retain the meaning and style of the original text. We can provide some limited redrafting at no extra cost where suitable - for instance, where we have misunderstood the original text.

Cost - $2 per 100 words (or part thereof).

Delivery

While we endeavour to complete all our orders as soon as possible, the size and nature of a job will of course affect how soon we can be done. We will aim to finish smaller orders within a week; for large orders, we will discuss them as required. Please let us know if you need work done quickly and we will do what we can to accommodate you.
